Reading Group: At the Existentialist Café

Connect the exhibition to the literature.

Following a viewing of the exhibition From the Desk of Simone de Beauvoir, participate in a moderated discussion of Sarah Bakewell’s At the Existentialist Café: Freedom, Being, and Apricot Cocktails which brings to light Simone de Beauvoir’s circle of French Existentialists, the foundation of their philosophy, and the historical and social contexts in which it developed. This book weaves biography, personal response, and accessible explanations of philosophical principles into an extremely enjoyable read.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION:

This installation, an interpretation of Simone de Beauvoir’s Paris studio alcove, invites visitors to reflect on the writer’s impact, not only in her time and not only as a feminist, but in our own time and in the areas of literature, philosophy, and popular culture.
